About B&M #3713

Built in 1934 by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio for service across northern New England on the Boston & Maine Railroad, the big passenger engine was at first known only as #3713. In 1937 the B&M held a contest for Boston area school children to name the road’s premier locomotives, from which the patriotic moniker “The Constitution” was bestowed upon #3713.

America’s Locomotive Campaign

An estimated $1.4 million is required to finish the restoration of #3713. As part of a renewed agreement with the National Park Service signed in 2016, Project3713 via the “America’s LocomotiveTM”” campaign has taken on the task of raising $750,000 of the remaining cost. The balance will be provided by the National Park Service. As of January 1, 2018 Project3713 has raised $342,000 towards the $750,000 commitment.
